Why it's important to keep swimming pool ph levels balanced

To ensure that everyone enjoys using your pool, it is important to keep the swimming pool pH levels in balance at all times. If the pH is too high, it could cause skin irritation and corrode metal parts on the pool. If the pH is too low, it could create a situation where the chlorine in the pool isn't as effective.

What Is a Good pH Level?

The pH scale ranges from 0-14. A pH level of 0 indicates the highest level of acidity in the water. A pH level of 14 indicates a high level of alkalinity in the water. Therefore, it is best to try to keep the water at a pH level of 7, which indicates a good balance between acidity and alkalinity.

What Happens if the pH Level Is High?

Attempting to swim in a pool that has a pH level of less than 7 is akin to getting soap or shampoo in your eyes. Exposed skin could become irritated, red and itchy. If highly acidic water makes contact with the eyes or is swallowed, it could cause a serious medical emergency that needs to be addressed right away. If you have a metal ladder that leads to the pool, the ladder could erode or become unstable. That could create another dangerous situation and a potential lawsuit if someone were to get hurt in your pool.

What Happens When the pH Level Is Low?

When the pH level is higher than 7, it could create a situation where the water is cloudy, bacteria or other pathogens in the water are not properly dealt with and issues could occur with the plumbing equipment used in the pool. If the water is too cloudy or dirty, it could create a health hazard for everyone who uses the pool.

Balancing the pH Is a Continuous Process

Keeping the pH level in check is a constant process. pH levels should be checked regularly to ensure that it hasn't changed too much in the last 24 hours. It is important to know that almost anything can disrupt the pH balance of the pool. Everything from people jumping into the pool to leaves and other debris landing in the water could make it necessary to raise or lower the pH.

While you can add or lower the pH level in your pool is something that you can do yourself, it is suggested to enlist professional help to do the job right. If you're unsure about how to keep a proper pH level in your pool should not hesitate to give us a call to schedule an appointment to have it professionally done by our pool maintenance experts.
